POSITION: Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Rhode Island

YWCA Rhode Island Board of Directors seeks a Chief Executive Officer to continue building upon the remarkable 155 year history, impact, and influence of YWCA Rhode Island.

The Chief Executive Officer is an experienced nonprofit leader who will advocate successfully and passionately on behalf of the YWCA, our mission, and the individuals and communities we serve.

The Chief Executive Officer must be a hands-on leader and role model; a strategic, analytical, and out-of-the box thinker; an effective and courageous head-on problem solver with a can do attitude, and someone who responds to challenges with sound, consistent and fair judgment.

The Chief Executive Officer is also a collaborative and communicative leader who can successfully motivate and inspire team and board members, as well as a wide range of constituents, supporters, and community members.

The successful candidate will possess the professional qualifications, experience, and personal attributes to perform the following responsibilities and duties.

Champion of Culture & Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

• Champion the YWCA’s commitment to racial and gender justice within the organization, as well as externally in the larger community.
• Cultivate a strong organizational culture in support of the mission of the YWCA that is welcoming, diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Financial Management and Fund Development

• Provide comprehensive fiscal management oversight, develop annual organizational and program operating budgets; regularly monitor operating revenue and expenditures; monitor all endowment and investment funds; approve timesheets and payroll, and ensure compliance to organizational financial policies, grant funders, and standard accounting practices.
• Assess risk management procedures and emergency preparedness planning on an ongoing basis.
• Engage in effective fundraising and development of assets needed to ensure the on-going viability of the organization, its resources, programs, services and facilities.
• Identify revenue sources and engage potential supporters to assure ongoing program and fiscal stability.
• Plan, develop and execute strategies for annualized revenue and fundraising events.
• Bring a creative and entrepreneurial approach to revenue generation.
• Assure the proper use of YWCA facilities.
• Allocate resources for necessary facility maintenance and capital improvements through the annual operating and capital budget planning process, and oversee capital design, construction, and renovation projects.

Strategic and Organizational Leader

• Develop and implement strategic priorities needed to advance the work of the YWCA, utilizing established short-and long-term goals that support the mission, vision, and values of the YWCA.
• Ensure a long-range plan is in place for facility assets, maintenance and replacement.
• Build and maintain a robust partnership with the Board and its committees.
• Create and sustain a collaborative work environment for staff, supporting and coaching them to achieve their potential while holding them accountable to clearly defined expectations and goals.
• Role model work behaviors and supervisory/management skills.
• Provide the leadership, guidance and support needed to ensure smooth transitions through organizational leadership and/or structural change.
• Represent YWCA Rhode Island at YWCA Northeast Region and YWCA USA meetings.

Program Planning

• Lead the organization in identifying, enhancing, developing and implementing innovative programming and services.
• Build, maintain, and uphold relationships and standards necessary to ensure the YWCA Rhode Island remains in good standing with YWCA USA.

Exceptional Communication Skills

• Deliver compelling and engaging stories of the YWCA’s mission, history, and programming in an effort to recruit and connect with potential partners and funders, and to advance the organization’s mission.
• Confidently, through persuasive coalition building, foster community partnerships and collaborations.
• Maintain the reputation and visibility of the YWCA through oversight of communications and marketing policies and plans.
• Serve as chief spokesperson and community advocate for the YWCA.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required in Business Administration, Public Administration, Community and Regional Planning, Finance or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Five or more years of demonstrated success in senior level non-profit leadership including capacity building, grant writing, fund development, program development, and staff development, coaching and management.
• Demonstrated success working within a Board of Directors, committees, and volunteer leadership structure.
• Demonstrated success in leadership, communication, and fiscal management.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in human resource management, staff recruitment, discipline, termination, and basic employment laws. Experienced in coaching and supervision of staff, administration of personnel policies, benefits, and Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity practices and policies.
• Demonstrated success in grant writing, administration, and monitoring.
• Successful experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation, including designing and monitoring program outcomes and measurement methods.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of racial and gender justice, and DEI practices.
• Proven history of resourcefulness, creativity, and an ability to think “outside the box.”
• Strong planning, prioritizing and delegating skills with demonstrated ability to successfully meet deadlines.
• Effective advocacy and strong relationships with local community influencers, and elected leaders at the local, state and federal level.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, Goggle Suite, Publisher, and virtual platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Working knowledge of database usage and social media platforms.
• Demonstrated aptitude for construction oversight, mechanical systems in physical structures, as well as facilities and property management.
• Must pass a Bureau of Criminal Identification and RI Child Abuse and Neglect Tracking System background checks as required by the State of Rhode Island, Department of Human Services, and must possess a valid driver’s license and pass the YWCA insurance provider required driving record background check.


• Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Community and Regional Planning, Finance, or related graduate degree plus five years demonstrated success in senior level non-profit leadership including capacity building; grant writing; fund development; programming development, and staff development and management.
• Politically savvy, with superior presentation, public speaking, interpersonal, relationship management, persuasiveness, negotiation, diplomacy, influencing, and listening skills.
• Ability to manage a complex business with experience and confidence.
• Experience leading and driving systems change amid dynamic external economic, social, political, technological, and competitive forces and pressure.


●Must live within a reasonable commuting distance to YWCA facilities.

●Full-time, exempt position. On-site. Some weekends and evenings.

●Salary 100k-150K depending on experience and qualifications.
