About the Organization

The Goldman Environmental Foundation (GEF) was established by Richard and Rhoda Goldman in 1989 to honor and inspire grassroots environmental activism around the world. GEF administers the Goldman Environmental Prize—known as the “Nobel Prize for the Environment”—the world’s foremost award for grassroots environmental leaders. The Prize is awarded each year to environmental heroes from six geographic regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands & Island Nations, North America, and South & Central America. The Prize is presented at ceremonies each April in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., with virtual ceremonies during the pandemic.

The Prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk. Each winner receives a significant and unrestricted cash award, international recognition and publicity, and global visibility for the issues they champion. The Goldman Prize views grassroots leaders as those creating positive change through community participation in the issues that affect them. By putting a spotlight on these individual leaders, the Prize seeks to inspire ordinary people to take extraordinary actions to protect the natural world. Prize winners come from 93 different countries and a diverse range of backgrounds.

Program Manager – Prize Winner Security & Support

In close collaboration with the Deputy Director, program officers, and external partners, the Program Manager – Prize Winner Outreach is responsible for managing relationships and activities with past Prize winners primarily through three programs: Defense of Prize Winners, Grantmaking, and Networking. The Program Manager reports to the Deputy Director and provides key information and insights for programmatic decision-making.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Defense of Prize Winners

Environmental activists around the world are enduring increasing levels of violence. Risks to Prize winners range from digital surveillance to violence and assassination. To address these threats, in 2015, GEF launched a Defense of Prize Winners program, which provides security support to past and current Prize winners in the form of risk assessments, trainings, security interventions, and more. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the security support process for Prize winners as needed
  • Managing security contractors as they conduct risk assessments, security grants, and other security measures
  • Managing the program’s budget and records
  • Keeping abreast of security risks in various countries through media and relationships with in-country partners

Grantmaking

In partnership with the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund, GEF offers past Prize winners a limited number of grants to advance their organizations’ environmental campaigns and inspire community members to engage in grassroots environmental activism. Key responsibilities include:

  • Outreach to past Prize winners and their organizations regarding grant applications and reports
  • Coordinating with the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund for the administration of grant funds
  • Tracking program budget, records, and results
  • Providing detailed reports and dockets to Board of Directors and other relevant decision-makers
  • Facilitating annual grant funding meetings

Networking

To help Prize winners build broader networks, connect with each other, share learnings, and expand their leadership capacity, GEF provides support for Prize winners to meet and participate in networking opportunities such as conferences, meetings, and other events. Program budget is available to support individual Prize winner networking in 2022. However, due to the pandemic it is unlikely that we will resume any large-scale, in-person networking events, including the Prize winner tour, until 2023. Key responsibilities include:

  • In partnership with the Deputy Director, developing, planning, and implementing group networking opportunities for Prize winners
  • Collaborating with partner organizations to identify and organize networking opportunities for Prize winners at events/conferences
  • Managing Prize winner requests for financial support for individual networking opportunities
  • Managing network budgets and records

Prize Winner Outreach

  • Maintaining up-to-date contact information, details, and work status for all Prize winners
  • Communicating with Prize winners about GEF initiatives, programs, and opportunities
  • Collaborating with communications team to create content for Prize networks
  • Providing Spanish translations for GEF outreach to Prize winners as needed

Prize Winner Selection and Tour Planning

  • Supporting colleagues in review and discussion of Prize nominees and selection of finalists
  • Supporting colleagues in the organization and execution of the Prize winner tour, including staffing hotels, traveling to Washington, D.C., and providing Prize winners on-site assistance

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree and three-plus years of relevant work experience
  • Strong project management skills and demonstrated experience managing multiple tasks
  • Strong writing and editing skills (e.g., drafting grant reports and Prize winner communications)
  • Fluency in Spanish (written and verbal)
  • Strong crisis management skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, including effectively communicating with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including communities in remote and non-US locations
  • Knowledge of and interest in current international environmental issues
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google calendar, and Salesforce; demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Excel or other number tracking software preferred
  • Works cooperatively and effectively in a small team environment

 

Compensation and Location

GEF is based in San Francisco and the staff is currently working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The strong preference is for this position to work from our San Francisco office a few days per week, but fully remote candidates will be considered. GEF expects Bay Area staff to return to the office under a hybrid structure in early 2022. GEF offers a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience and an excellent benefits package.

Our compensation range for this role is $85,000 – $100,000.

Position requires that much of the work done at a computer workstation and over the telephone. It may be necessary to occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
