The California Teachers Association seeks a visionary Executive Director to guide the work of one of California’s largest and most dynamic labor organizations. CTA is the premier voice in California for high-quality public education for all students. Through its 1,000 chapters and over 310,000 members across the State, CTA vigorously advocates for the employment rights of public education employees and the civil rights of the students whom they serve.
The Executive Director is responsible for CTA’s consistent achievement of its mission, strategic plan goals, and financial objectives. The Executive Director oversees CTA’s statewide operations, programs, 450 staff members, and its multi-million dollar annual budget. The Executive Director acts on behalf of the Board of Directors in all matters involving elected leadership, members and staff in a democratic governance structure. Responsibilities span a broad range of involvement with organizations external to CTA and with the entire internal structure of CTA. The Executive Director will help CTA continue to grow a member-driven union with strong organizing programs and engaged members and will possess a bold and broad vision for CTA’s role in promoting public education and racial and social justice. This position is the top executive management position for CTA. CTA is an affiliate of the National Education Association (NEA).
• Keeps the Board of Directors informed on issues, needs, and operations of the Association.
• Recommends programs to the Board to implement and achieve Association objectives.
• Supports the CTA President in performing the President’s responsibilities as leader and prime spokesperson for the Association.
• Anticipates major issues that will affect public education and prepares appropriate recommendations for consideration by the Board and Officers.
• Supports the Executive Officers and Board members in their efforts to implement Association goals.
Staff, Personnel, and Program Management
• Leads, directs, and manages CTA staff.
• Evaluates performance of managers according to adopted policies and job descriptions.
• Fosters a diverse and equity-driven workforce.
• Directs statewide field program that aims to build strong local chapters, organize new union members, and improve teaching and learning conditions in schools and colleges.
• Oversees CTA political and governmental relations programs.
• Supervises the internal labor relations program.
• Keeps informed of the financial status of the Association.
• Promotes competent and efficient business processes and procedures.
• Evaluates financial conditions and needs and prepares appropriate budgetary recommendations for consideration within the established processes.
• Supports governance actions and policies to membership, local leaders, staff and public.
• Serves as liaison to NEA and works effectively with NEA staff as State UniServ Coordinator.
• Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with other labor, educational, governmental and community-based organizations to further CTA’s mission.
• Promotes the programs and policies of the Association to elected government officials.
• Extensive executive management experience leading complex organizations with active Board of Directors’ oversight.
• BA or BS Degree. Advanced Degree strongly preferred.
• Work-related education background including faculty experience in public schools preferred.
• Broad and deep understanding of the critical issues and problems facing the public schools and the education profession in California.
• Experience with and broad understanding of education issues at local, state and national levels.
• Deep experience and background in labor unions and longstanding commitment to union advocacy.
• Experience with and commitment to supporting work of racial and social justice.
• Demonstrated organizing, negotiating and coordinating skills necessary to successfully complete complex group projects and activities.
• Experience administering a multi-million dollar budget.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to face controversy and remain calm in crisis situations.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to make sound decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with a wide diversity of individuals and groups, including in a governance structure.
• Demonstrated leadership ability in working with professional groups.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated highly effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with Association leaders, CTA members and staff, as well as an open, inclusive and organizational management style.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.
