Website Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers

Position: Executive Director

Organization: Board of Bar Overseers of the Supreme Court

Location: Boston, MA

Type/Industry: Legal

Established by the Supreme Judicial Court (the “Court”) in 1974, the Board of Bar Overseers (“BBO”) serves as the independent administrative and regulatory body which investigates and evaluates complaints against the Commonwealth’s attorneys and recommends disciplinary action as appropriate. The BBO also oversees attorney registrations to the bar as well as petitions for reinstatement to the bar. It includes an Office of General Counsel (“OGC”), Office of Bar Counsel (“OBC”), and Registration department and provides staff and administrative support to the Clients’ Security Board (“CSB”) and the Court’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being.

The BBO is governed by a twelve-member board, eight of whom are Massachusetts lawyers and four of whom are public (non-attorney) members. All members are appointed by the Court and serve voluntarily, without compensation, for staggered four-year terms. Although the BBO is subject to the supervision of the Court, no taxpayer funds are spent to support its work. Rather, the BBO’s operations are funded solely from annual registration fees paid by members of the Massachusetts bar. Registration fees also support related entities including the CSB and lawyer assistance programs, which are not part of the BBO.
