Center for Human Development The Center for Human Development offers volunteer opportunities for students and community members interested in enabling youth to make positive choices, while learning group facilitation, community building and communication skills. Volunteers receive training in cooperative learning and issues of youth development prior to entering into the mentor relationship. Mentors may choose to volunteer at one of four schools located throughout San Francisco and a residential home for adjudicated men one hour out of the city.
Overview of the Youth Striving for Excellence Mentor Program: The Youth Striving for Excellence (YSE) Mentor Program is a comprehensive drop-out prevention program promoting healthy lifestyles and awareness of the risks of drug and alcohol use. The Mentoring program trains, supports volunteers as they mentor youth in the County Community Schools of San Francisco, and individually designs volunteer opportunities according to their needs, talents and special interests. The YSE program has two important components ;
- A classroom based cooperative learning program, co-facilitated by staff members, examining the issues surrounding negative decision making and substance abuse. Program curriculum includes topics such as self-esteem, anger management, goal-setting, decision making and sexual health.
- A mentoring program that complements the classroom facilitation, allowing teachers and mentors to work as a team in providing students with a multitude of resources in the classroom. Mentors and students may elaborate on curriculum topics in small groups or one-on-one or develop special projects in conjunction with the subject curriculum. Each mentor assignment is unique and created individually.
